Our Policy Priorities
Counterfeiting is not just an economic issue — it is a public health and safety crisis. CACN works with government, industry, and law enforcement to strengthen Canada's legal framework and ensure that IP rights are effectively enforced at the border and in the marketplace.
Combating Counterfeit Products Act
Bill C-8 received Royal Assent on December 9, 2014, amending the Trademarks Act and Copyright Act to add new civil and criminal prohibitions against the manufacture, importation, exportation, and distribution of counterfeit goods.
Plain Packaging
CACN opposes plain packaging legislation that strips brand owners of their trademarks, arguing it undermines anti-counterfeiting efforts, removes security features that help identify fakes, and threatens Canada's trading rights at the WTO.
Health and Safety
Counterfeit goods pose serious health and safety risks. RCMP data shows harmful counterfeit product occurrences rose from 11.5% in 2005 to 30.4% in 2012, spanning pharmaceuticals, electrical products, food, and more.
